I know about the map that you use to travel from one system to another but its zoomed in too much so i dont get a sense of scale.

To navigate i try to look at the other planets on my system map center data screen in your ships cockpit. If you wanted to map out your entire home planet or any planet you could build color coded beacons at every location. Is there a galactic map view where you can zoom out and see about where you are.

There are over 18 quintillion planets to discover within the game. Generally there is no purpose since there is rarely a scarcity of trading posts and such.
